Corns & Callus. Relief that lasts.

What Are Corns & Callus?

Corns and callus are both forms of thickened, hardened skin that develop in response to repeated pressure or friction. They are made up of the same material — keratin, a tough protein that forms part of the skin’s natural protective response.

Callus is a broader area of thickened skin that typically develops on the ball of the foot, heel or outer edge of the foot. It is usually painless but can become uncomfortable when it builds up significantly.

Corns are smaller, more concentrated areas of hard skin with a central core that pushes into the deeper layers of tissue. This central core is what creates the familiar “walking on a pebble” sensation. There are several distinct types:

• Hard corns — the most common type, typically found on the tops or tips of toes or on the ball of the foot
• Soft corns — whitish and rubbery in texture, developing between toes where moisture prevents hardening
• Seed corns — tiny corns appearing singly or in clusters on the sole of the foot, usually painless
• Neurovascular corns — the most painful and complex type, incorporating fine nerve endings and small blood vessels

Why Do I Have Corns & Callus?

Corns and callus develop when repeated pressure or friction causes the skin to produce excess keratin as a protective mechanism. When that response becomes excessive, it creates a problem rather than solving one. Common contributing factors include:

• Ill-fitting footwear — shoes that are too tight, narrow, shallow or high-heeled
• Biomechanical issues — bunions, hammer toes, flat feet or high arches that concentrate pressure on specific areas
• Walking or standing for long periods on hard surfaces
• Ill-fitting or absent socks
• Thin or fragile skin associated with ageing or certain medical conditions
• Diabetes or poor circulation, which affect skin quality and healing
• Smoking, which impairs circulation and skin health

Identifying which of these factors is driving your corns or callus is the key to long-term relief — something an over-the-counter treatment cannot do.

Treatment at Sydney Podiatry Co

At Sydney Podiatry Co, our podiatrists will safely and gently remove your corns and callus using specialist instruments, providing immediate relief. But removal alone is only part of the picture — we will also:

• Identify the underlying pressure or biomechanical cause
• Recommend a regular maintenance schedule to keep you pain-free
• Assess and advise on your footwear fit
• Apply padding or deflection materials to reduce recurrence
• Discuss whether custom orthotics are appropriate to redistribute pressure and address biomechanical contributing factors

Over-the-counter corn paints and medicated plasters treat the surface only — not the underlying problem. Used incorrectly, they can damage the healthy skin surrounding the corn. For patients with diabetes, poor circulation or other vascular conditions, medicated corn plasters can be genuinely dangerous and should never be used without professional advice.

Corns & Callus in Diabetic Patients

For patients with diabetes, corns and callus require particular care. Reduced sensation from peripheral neuropathy means pressure areas can develop and worsen without pain as a warning signal. Thickened skin over a pressure point can mask ulceration developing beneath it, and poor circulation slows the healing of any skin breakdown.

At Sydney Podiatry Co, our podiatrists are experienced in managing corns and callus in high-risk patients, and our clinic includes an RN-qualified podiatrist with specialist expertise in wound care and high-risk foot management.

If you have diabetes and have not had a recent foot assessment, we strongly recommend booking a diabetic foot assessment alongside your corn and callus treatment.

When Should I See a Podiatrist?

Book an appointment if your corn or callus is:

• Causing persistent or worsening pain
• Not resolving despite changes to footwear
• Recurring regularly in the same location
• Associated with redness, swelling or any signs of infection
• Present alongside diabetes, poor circulation or any vascular condition

Do not attempt to cut or dig out a corn yourself. This frequently worsens the problem, introduces infection risk and makes professional treatment more complex.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a corn and a callus?
Both are areas of thickened skin caused by pressure or friction. Callus is a broader, flatter buildup typically found on the heel or ball of the foot. A corn is smaller and more concentrated, with a central core that presses into deeper skin layers — this is what makes corns more painful than callus.

Can I treat corns and callus at home?
Gentle pumice stone use on callus after bathing is generally safe for healthy patients. However, over-the-counter corn paints, pads and medicated plasters should be used with caution — they can damage surrounding healthy skin and are unsafe for patients with diabetes or poor circulation. For persistent or recurring corns and callus, professional podiatry treatment is always the recommended approach.

Will my corns come back after treatment?
Without addressing the underlying cause, yes. Podiatry treatment removes the buildup and provides immediate relief, but long-term prevention requires identifying and managing the contributing factors — footwear, biomechanics, pressure distribution. This is why a podiatry assessment rather than just a removal service produces better long-term outcomes.

Are corns and callus dangerous for diabetic patients?
They can be. In patients with peripheral neuropathy or poor circulation, thickened skin can mask pressure ulcers developing beneath it, and any skin breakdown heals poorly. Diabetic patients should have corns and callus managed professionally and regularly as part of their overall diabetic foot care.

How is corn and callus treatment different from a medical pedicure?
A skin and nail appointment focuses specifically on the clinical assessment and treatment of conditions like corns, callus, ingrown toenails and nail care. Our Flawless Feet Medical Pedicure includes clinical skin and nail care alongside a spa-inspired experience — a scrub, collagen massage and nail polish finish. Many patients choose both services at different times depending on their needs.
