Rebecca has pursued additional specialist training in wound care. She is experienced with complex and high-risk patients, trained to recognise and appropriately escalate signs of infection, vascular compromise or systemic complications.

What Your Treatment Involves

Every patient is assessed individually. Your wound care appointment will involve a thorough clinical assessment of the wound and surrounding tissue, followed by an appropriate treatment plan. This may include:

• Sharp debridement — precise removal of non-viable or infected tissue to promote healthy wound healing
• Wound irrigation and cleansing — thorough cleaning to reduce bacterial load and prepare the wound bed
• Advanced dressings — selection of the most clinically appropriate dressing based on wound type, exudate level and healing stage
• Offloading and pressure deflection — reducing mechanical load on the wound to allow healing, particularly important for plantar foot ulcers

Where clinical findings indicate a concern beyond our scope, we will communicate promptly with your GP or relevant specialist without delay.

Our wound care patients include:

• Patients with diabetes managing foot ulcers or high-risk foot changes
• Elderly patients with wounds that are slow to heal
• Patients referred by their GP or specialist for ongoing wound management
• Self-referred patients who have been managing a wound independently without improvement

No referral is required to book an appointment, though we welcome and regularly work alongside GP referrals and specialist teams.

Can a podiatrist treat diabetic foot ulcers?
Yes. Podiatrists are trained in the assessment and management of diabetic foot ulcers. At Sydney Podiatry Co, Rebecca Calloway holds dual qualifications as a registered nurse with specialist training in high-risk wound management.

Do I need a referral?
No referral is required to book a wound care appointment. If you have been referred by your GP or specialist, we welcome that communication and will provide a full clinical report back to your referring practitioner.

Is wound care covered by Medicare or private health insurance?
Wound care appointments may attract a Medicare rebate for eligible patients under a Chronic Condition Management Plan (CCMP). Most private health funds with podiatry extras will also provide a rebate. We offer HICAPS on-the-spot claiming at every appointment.

What is sharp debridement?
Sharp debridement is the precise removal of non-viable or infected tissue using specialist instruments. It is one of the most effective methods for preparing a wound bed for healing. Performed by our RN-qualified podiatrist in a fully sterile clinical environment.

How do I know if my wound needs professional care?
Seek professional assessment if your wound has not improved after two weeks, shows signs of infection such as redness, warmth, swelling or discharge, or if you have diabetes or poor circulation. When in doubt, call our clinic — we will advise honestly.

• CCMP Medicare — wound care appointments may attract a Medicare rebate for eligible patients referred by their GP under a Chronic Condition Management Plan. Speak to your GP or contact our clinic to find out if you qualify.
• NDIS — we are a registered NDIS provider. If podiatry is included in your support plan, wound care may be fundable. Contact our clinic to discuss.
